It Can't Happen Here

The Road To Ragnarök

...well, of course it can.

Bangor Daily News:

Report: 'Dirty bomb' parts found in slain man's home, By Walter Griffin/BDN Staff

BELFAST, Maine — James G. Cummings, who police say was shot to death by his wife two months ago, allegedly had a cache of radioactive materials in his home suitable for building a “dirty bomb.”

According to an FBI field intelligence report from the Washington Regional Threat and Analysis Center posted online by WikiLeaks (PDF), an investigation into the case revealed that radioactive materials were removed from Cummings’ home after his shooting death on Dec. 9.

(...) four 1-gallon containers of 35 percent hydrogen peroxide, uranium, thorium, lithium metal, thermite, aluminum powder, beryllium, boron, black iron oxide and magnesium ribbon were found in the home.

Also found was literature on how to build “dirty bombs” and information about cesium-137, strontium-90 and cobalt-60, radioactive materials.
The FBI report also stated there was evidence linking James Cummings to white supremacist groups. This would seem to confirm observations by local tradesmen who worked at the Cummings home that he was an ardent admirer of Adolf Hitler and had a collection of Nazi memorabilia around the house, including a prominently displayed flag with swastika.
An application for membership in the National Socialist Movement filled out by Cummings also was found in the residence, according to the report.
Cummings’ wife, Amber B. Cummings, 31, told investigators that her husband spoke of “dirty bombs,” according to the report, and mixed chemicals in her kitchen sink.
She allegedly told police that Cummings subjected her to years of mental, physical and sexual abuse. She also said that Cummings was “very upset” when Barack Obama was elected president.

Just to fill in the blanks here...An emotionally unstable individual with a rather large trust fund and somewhat extreme political viewpoints was on their way to creating a weapon of mass destruction in a cozy suburban basement, and the only thing that foiled the plan was a well-deserved mariticide.

The greatest threat to America will not be from without, in spite of the last 8 years of global bad faith and cowboy diplomacy.

It will be from within, and from reactionary and racist elements that will stop at nothing to achieve their ends. Be aware.

James G. Cummings? Don't you mean, Muhammad G. Al-Cummings? White folks can't be turrists!

Of course not, Randal...The correct Reagan-style appellation is 'freedom fighter' in such cases.

Disturbing. . .

But pro-active law enforcement is a long way off. . . this country will never get tough on genocidal hate groups or individuals until they succeed in killing half a million people.

As this is up my alley I need to let you guys in on a little secret. A " dirty bomb" is a fairly easy thing to clean up. Anthrax is much more difficult to clean up. It's the psychological effect that's more damaging.

Indeed, M.Hart, however, it is my opinion that by that point the damage will have been done and any act of the government or people will be a moot point. They will have 'won'.
...
Thank you for your professional insight, Demeur.
I would concur that bioweapons would be far more problematic in such aspects as you mention - An exploding meth lab might represent a greater short and long-term hazard to the immediate surroundings than such a 'dirty bomb' (given the limitations in manufacturing it), and societal programming regarding nuclear weapons over the decades may adversely affect the population's perspective on such things...Such programming, of course not being as closely focused on CBW, for fear of 'unduly alarming the public'.

The blatant and proud ignorance on display with that man is most disheartening, Brendan.
To think...Walking into a church and shooting unarmed people because of a disagreement over politics, followed up with 'suicide by cop'.
A true warrior would never walk that path.

I hope the right wing misinformation guild is pleased with yet another creation of theirs.
Somehow, I doubt that the seeds of their fruit will be as sweet for them.

I, too, would like to think that the revelations about Adkisson's taste in books would cause at least a few moments of pause among their authors, but somehow, I doubt it. The capacity for denial that a guy like O'Reilly would have to have to do the show he does for as long as he has makes him immune from self-reflection about personal responsibility, I'm sure.
